Yes, even though we have only six readers, the Ludic Log sometimes gets hate mail. Let's take a look at some, presented without comment.

Exactly what they want - A LACK OF DIVERSITY. Naw, they'd be lounging at the oasis, happy in their isolationism, waiting for Allah to delver them 100 wenches each. Better in Mississippi than dead. "I do not belong to a union. At one time I did but that was many years ago when I worked in the private industry. I now work for a city government and must admit I am treated fair. My wages are based on the prevailing wage of my profession. People in the private sector have their wages based on the prevailing wage for the job that they perform. Do an Internet search on prevailing wages in you area. I'm not sure if you know what i'm talking about so let me explain. If a company lives in your city, or wants to come to your city it has to know what it will have to pay people to do the jobs that need to be done. The cheaper it can get labor the more profit the company will make. Lets say you drive a fork lift. The company must know how much money it will cost to hire a fork lift driver. If the job for the driver is fast paced and in tight quarters they may need to pay him (or her) a little more than the prevailing wage to draw the better candidates from other factories. Now why all this on prevailing wages? It was the union shops that set the prevailing wages. They went on strike to get a fair shake of the profits that they were helping to create. Others reaped the benefits as the prevailing wage went up. But that was long ago. Since the unions have lost some of their strength the prevailing wage has gone down all across the country. When was the last time you heard the term "Living Wage"? When I was young many places said they paid a livin wage. This was enough money to afford a car, home, and would pay the bills. This was a wage given to one person, not based on two people working as it is today.What people don't realize is that when a union goes on strike they will hopefully raise the prevailing wage for everyone, but if they loose all of you will loose too. My son just went on strike at Wis-Pac in Watertown Wisconsin. He just got married last year, took out a loan for a car and a house. It's a good possibility that people will cross the picket lines because at this time Pepsi pays better than a lot of the jobs in town, not much more, but some. And who knows, the company may break the union because of people like you. I have to tell you that I am glad I am close to retirement, and that I feel sorry for my grand kids. They, as well as your kids will be paid less for their efforts. It all boils down to a dollar, for you or for the company. Will the Pepsi be made? Sure it will, but the taste is not so sweet. What should you do? Look at the big picture, and make a choice. It will not be easy no matter what you decide. As for me, I will support my son and the union, and I will never call anyone a scab. I will feel sorry for the person who has to cross the picket line and thank God I was born in better times. I will also do what ever I can to help my kids and grand kids get the training and education they will need to support their families in the future. What you are doing is effecting generations to come. The rich will get richer, and the poor will get poorer. As it is today, but much worse in the future as the prevailing wages decline. It's not as simple as "I gotta work" "What can I do" "How come they don't like me no more". They are no different than you, they need to support their families too. But they are willing to risk their jobs for their fair share of the profits. I have to respect them for making a sacrifice for the future of us all. I believe that unions will make a come back in this country but only if the wages are so low people will have to work two jobs to put food on the table, and the government stops all of the programs it has to help the poor. It might take many years since young people don't remember better times. Who knows, with all of the immigration companies might have an endless line of cheap labor willing to work long hours with no benefits"
