LUDIC LOG
11.25.2004

Thanskgiving again, and that means a light posting weekend.  To tide you over while you're waiting for the pies to cool, here's my entry in the ancient blogger tradition of listing things I'm thankful for this holiday season.

1.  I am thankful beyond words for my girlfriend.  She's bright, kind, beautiful, curious and dedicated, and she has meant an unbelievable lot to me.  I try every day to justify the love and trust she has shown me, and I measure every minute until I see her again.  Thanks, Shauna.

2.  I am thankful every day for my roommate.  It seems she has always been my friend -- I can barely remember a time when she wasn't there for me -- and she's stayed that way through huge amounts of difficulties and trials.  I know that whatever the future holds she will always be the dearest of friends.  Thanks, Cori.

3.  I am immeasurably thankful for my friends.  Since my relationship with my extended family is essentially non-existent, my friends form for me the safety net, support system and social network that most people get from their families, and I am incredibly fortunate to know so many intelligent, interesting and caring people.  Thanks to, among others, Doug, Andrea, Kate, Allison, Claire, Steve, Michael, Anaheed, Rob, Robyn, Jeff, and, especially, Lara.

4.  I am thankful and very grateful for my parents.  My mother couldn't have children of her own, and I was adopted -- many people look at this as second-rate, as a disadvantage, but I have always thought of it this way:  I was well and truly wanted.  My parents and I are extremely different people, and times have very often been trying for us, but I will always love them for who they are.  Thanks, Al & Dorothy.

5.  I am thankful, in a professional and personal sense, for my editors.  As a writer I am not always the easiest person to deal with, and no doubt my idiosyncratic stubborness helps account for why I don't make a living at this, but I always strive to be efficient and professional, and I am lucky enough to have a handful of editors that are a delight to work with.  Thanks to Jennifer, Gary, Hayden, Elizabeth, and Kevin.

6.  I am thankful for a number of people I consider very close friends even though I may have only met them a few times, or even never met them at all.  Through the auspices of the internet, I have forged communities of people who have graced me with their kindness and good humor, tolerated me in bad times, congratulated me in good times, and been just as true and real in their friendships as anyone I've known in the 'real world'.  There are still those who denigrate the internet as a means of forging relationships, but all I can say is that through it, I have advanced my career, become more informed and mature, met many good friends and seen them fall in love and marry, and met the woman I want to be with forever.  Thanks, among others, to Jennifer, Leigh, Brent, Jason, Brian, Jane, Christian, Christina, Manning, Tami, Jon, Kate, Nate, Nick, Yuri, Kevin, Cheryl, Liz, Meenoo, Dave, Dora, Elizabeth, Andie, Bill, Andy, Rob, Tim, Maud, Whitney, Denise, Neal, Chris, Matt, Cindy, Kim, Austin, Mark, R.J., Shannon, Josh, & Julie.

7.  And, of course, I am happy for you, the reader.  Anyone who bothers to check on this site daily has my sincere and profound appreciation.  It's not evident most of the time, I know, but I put a lot of work into the Ludic Log, and each pair of eyes it attracts has my deepest gratitude.  Thanks, all six of you, and happy Thanksgiving!
